Painting your front door is a quick, easy, and affordable way to refresh your home’s exterior. Best of all, it’s a great opportunity to express your personal style.
In this article, we’ll give you tips on what you need to paint an exterior door, along with helpful instructions for preparing the surface and painting the door to achieve the best results. Also watch the video at the end of the article to see how to paint your door with a brush or sprayer.

The painting instructions for a successful result are ultimately very simple with Frenchic paints:
-
Wash and clean the surface to be painted thoroughly and allow it to dry.
-
Sand the entire surface and wipe away the sanding dust.
- Apply at least two coats to a dry, clean surface, using thoroughly mixed paint. A paint range suitable for outdoor use is Al Fresco.
- Allow to dry according to the instructions.
Choosing the right paint for your front door - Al Fresco
If your door is exposed to the weather and is not under an eave or canopy, you need a suitably durable, weather-resistant paint.
Al Fresco paints contain UV protection and a mold inhibitor, as Al Fresco paints are a weather-resistant outdoor furniture paint range.
Many paints require a primer, which means buying extra products and adding more time to the project. Paints that include a primer - such as Al Fresco - reduce this hassle and cost.

What about the door color?
Think about the impression you want to create.
- Does the color need to match other outdoor buildings, such as the garage, etc.?
- Are you in an area where traditional colors are important?
- Would you like your door to stand out or blend in?
- Would you like to choose two colors: one for the outside and another for the inside of the door?
- For a hallway door, porch door, or other interior door, you can choose a shade from any Frenchic range. For an exterior door, use only the weather-resistant Al Fresco range.

Assess the condition of your exterior door before painting
Also consider how much wear and tear your door gets in everyday use:
Is there a pet in your family, for example, that jumps against the door and scratches its surface? If so, it’s worth applying a finishing coat to protect the paintwork after painting.
Clean the door thoroughly before painting
Rust must be removed, as well as algae, mold, or moss. These can usually be removed with outdoor cleaning solutions. Rinse the cleaning solution off the surface to be painted with clean water.
Always wear protective gear, such as a mask, safety glasses, and rubber gloves, when cleaning mold and using toxic paint or rust removers.
What do I need to paint a wooden door?
To get started, you’ll need at least:
✅Paint from the Al Fresco range
✅Sugar Soap cleaner, a container of water, a cloth or a sponge.
✅A finishing coat, matte or glossy
✅Protective paper or a cloth to place under the door
✅Sandpaper or another sanding tool
✅A paintbrush and/or roller
✅Masking tape if you have glass panels and want to tape off the handles and hinges
Choosing the right day to paint
Choosing the right date and even the time of day is also important, as it affects how well the paint spreads and cures.
Don’t paint outdoors if, during the next 48 hours:
✅The air temperature is forecast to drop below +10°C.
✅Rain is forecast
✅There is likely to be humidity or heavy dew overnight
✅A particularly severe heatwave is forecast
In general, it’s best to paint outdoors during the warmer months. However, applying paint in direct sunlight can also make it harder to work with, as it speeds up the drying process too much.
This can lead to uneven coverage and overloading the paint, so check the weather forecast before taking out your paintbrush.

A quick guide to painting a door - save these instructions:
✅ Set aside suitable weather and a free afternoon for painting your exterior door; a cloudy, dry day and a sheltered spot are best.
✅ Painting in very hot conditions or direct sunlight causes the paint to dry too quickly, preventing it from leveling out beautifully, so paint in the shade.
✅ When painting outdoors with Frenchic paints, the air temperature must stay at +10°C during the day and night for the first 48 hours.
✅ Durable Al Fresco paint from the range contains UV protection and anti-mould properties. It is weather-resistant and certified. Al Fresco has all the protective properties you need.

Surface preparation
Skipped the preparation? Get ready to fail.
Preparing the door’s surface is just as important as the painting itself. Proper preparation will help you achieve a smooth, long-lasting finish more easily. If your door is damaged, paint won’t repair the damaged surface or joints.
Preparing a door for painting - tips
Before you start painting, make sure you also follow these key preparation steps for the best results:
✅ Make sure you have protective paper or a cloth under the door and paint tins. Any splashes happen unnoticed, and it’s easy to tread door paint all over the place before you know it!
✅Use tape to cover any parts of or around the door that you don’t want to get paint on. Any glass panels should also be covered with cardboard or paper.
✅Protect, remove, or replace the door’s silicone seals. No paint will stick to the seals, so now might be a good time to replace them with new ones.
✅Make sure you have all the necessary tools, including a ladder if needed..
Now it’s time to start painting!

When you’re ready to get started, here are the next steps:
✅Apply the paint after mixing it thoroughly for a long time, following the direction of the wood grain.
✅Apply the second coat of paint after the recommended time - it’s important to follow the instructions on the paint tin carefully. The drying time between coats of Al Fresco paint is 2h.
✅Check the coverage and remember to mix the paint thoroughly so the protective agents and pigment are evenly mixed into the paint.
✅Assess the shade only after two dry coats.
✅When you’re happy with your work, remove the painter’s tape. It’s important to do this before the paint dries. Take care around the fresh paintwork for a few weeks.
Is your door made of a material other than wood?
- You may want to watch our video guide to painting UPVC doors, as the painting process is the same.
- Most UPVC furniture/surfaces can be painted. If possible, however, it’s worth checking with the door manufacturer to see if there are any restrictions.
- Remember to check the door’s structural integrity too. If there are signs of loose or badly damaged panels and joints, painting can sometimes make the problem worse.
