7 EASY STEPS HOW TO PAIN THE FURNITURE

7 EASY STEPS TO PAINT FURNITURE

Make the old beautiful again with paint!

A fresh coat of paint on walls and doors is the quickest and easiest way to refresh your home’s look and decor. You can do the same with furniture using high-quality paint from the Frenchic range.

Paint lets you make even big changes affordably and all by yourself.

Paint can turn an ordinary piece of furniture into something old and stylishly aged - perfect for a country-romantic or vintage-style home. Is your style minimalist or ruggedly bohemian?

Create furniture in your own style by upcycling old, well-preserved wooden furniture - give it a new look with colour!

Use black or neutral shades to paint furniture for a modern, Scandinavian or boho-style interior. A touch of gold or copper?

Whether you’re planning to refresh an old pine chest of drawers, table, bookcase or upholstered chair, these instructions will help you give one piece of furniture or the whole home a new look, recycle and save - repainting old furniture is a truly eco-friendly choice - you don’t always need to buy new.

Refresh with paint designed for furniture

1. Choose a brush

Your tools affect the result just as much as the quality of the paint. You can read more about choosing a brush here: there’s a dedicated blog post about it. Of course, you can use any old brush you have at home - but oval brushes work best with chalk paint. The rounded brush head is perfect for picking up plenty of paint. A dense-bristled oval brush speeds up your painting and makes the project more enjoyable, as it easily reaches every corner and crevice of the furniture.

2. Clean the furniture you’re going to paint

One of the benefits of Frenchic paints is that they require hardly any complicated or time-consuming preparation or priming. However, it’s important to paint only clean surfaces, so start by washing and wiping down the furniture with Sugar Soap furniture cleaner, especially if it has fingerprints, grease, oil or other surface dirt.

Sometimes furniture may look clean, but ingrained dirt comes off as brown dirty water when you wash it.

Furniture can also smell bad. There's a suitable product for that in the Frenchic range too - treat the washed and dried furniture twice with Finishing Coat finishing coat.

It seals in odors, so you can paint straight away - handy! You now have a clean, odor-free piece of furniture to paint, and the paint will adhere well to the surface, making it more durable.

3. Sand if needed; always roughen the surface lightly

However, check for any old paint that is chipped or peeling - it's best to remove it with sandpaper.

You don't need to sand surfaces down to bare wood; a few minutes of light sanding with a medium-grit sanding sponge is often enough.

Glossy, slippery surfaces such as metal or veneer benefit from light sanding, which gives the paint a good surface to adhere to.

Tip: Run your hand over the clean furniture surface - does it feel slippery, glossy and smooth? If so, lightly roughening it is a good idea.

Don't be afraid to sand and roughen the surface; it's an essential part of preparing before painting.

As a rule of thumb when repainting old, previously painted surfaces, keep this in mind: the more wear a surface will get, the more important it is to sand it before applying a new coat of paint.

4. Stir the paint thoroughly

Open the paint can with a purpose-made paint can opener so you can also close it neatly and tightly - the lid will stay intact and straight.

Stir chalk paint thoroughly before you start painting and occasionally during your project. If the pigment settles at the bottom, it will affect the coverage. Shaking the can before opening it is not enough to mix the pigments.

5. Apply at least two coats

Lightly dip the tip of the brush into the paint.

6. Let the first coat dry according to the instructions

Check the paint can for the drying time between coats. Frenchic paints dry quickly, so you can get back to painting soon and finish your project quickly.

Try these easy techniques too:

'Color Wash' or 'White Wash': If you like, you can try different painting techniques. You can add water to chalk paint: diluted paint creates a translucent wash. Always dilute the paint in a separate container, not directly in the paint can.

Paint with undiluted paint and an oval brush to achieve the texture and aged look of chalk paint - on new or old furniture.

In the 'Dry Brush' technique, there is almost no paint on the brush. Paint lightly, starting with the edges and corners, for example. Add more character and texture by brushing in crisscross strokes over the surface.

This technique does not involve adding water to the paint. Great videos on this technique are available in our Facebook group, 'Inspiring Interior Painting'.

Were you after that shabby chic look?

Take sandpaper or a sanding sponge and distress the painted surface wherever you like - for a natural result, distress areas that are naturally subject to heavy wear, such as edges, corners, and around handles. Sand the painted surface as much or as little as you like - there are no rules with this technique. Finally, apply another coat of wax so the distressed areas are protected. Learn more about using waxes.

7. Wax the furniture and distress it

Apply wax to a completely dry surface using a wax brush. Apply plenty of wax to the surface and wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth. The wax needs to soak through the chalk paint into the wood to protect the painted surface.

Alternative methods

  • An old piece of furniture can be refreshed with just a small change. Try adding a beautiful metallic shade to the moldings, edges, or decorative carvings - or paint just the legs or frame - sometimes less is more.

  • Want to add more texture to a furniture surface? Add Easy Crackle crackle medium between coats of Frenchic paint for a fun crackled finish, even on new furniture.
